Just as the SNP use the word Tory to repeatedly reinforce the Pavlovian conditioning of their brainwashed young nationalists the BBC in it's coverage of the experiments at Cern involving an expensive kit called the Large Hadron Collider has to request it's scientific stooges to keep referring to the hypothetical Higgs bosun as the 'God Particle'.
I know the BBC will bend over backwards to placate and appease any religion however medieval, pathologically violent , or even plain bonkers they are. They don't even call them religions any more favouring the softer, more PC euphemism 'Faiths' in much the same way middle class people like me are now apparently something called 'the squeezed middle (incredible but true).
Of course to anyone who is a scientist or an enthusiastic follower of scientific research we can only dream of consigning whoever coined the phrase 'the God Particle' to a similar fate to that Jeremy Clarkson jocularly recommended for the public sector pension strikers! The fact that some scientists play the game and were presumably paid for using the nonsensical term should serve as a wake up call for all of us who are trying to understand the truth behind this extravagant scientific pantomime currently underway at Cern.
I would say that the major discovery should have already been made public by the BBC, namely that Cern is all about the ambition and career promotion of scientists who have bamboozled politicians into giving them billions to prove or not prove something that is effectively meaningless to 99.999...% of the human population, and to the others merely an elaborate hoax designed to make pseudo-intellectuals feel smug with the trite soundbites that persuade them they truly know the answers when it's all just science fiction written in maths as opposed to English.
As one who followed this subject over the last 30 years or so the Horizon programme last night did touch on most of the issues the LHC is meant to address, but the masses of particles were quoted in GeVolts when it should have been GeVolts/c2 (Electon volts divided by the speed of light squared) as per E=mc2. This is more important than anything else as it turns out.
The earlier experiment, the LEP collider, created collisions between two FUNDAMENTAL particles the electron and it's ANTIPARTICLE the positron. The relationship between energy and mass in electromagnetic inelastic scattering is characterised by either 'pair production'- a photon transforms into a particle anti-particle pair, or 'annihilation' where a particle anti-particle pair collide producing a photon. In both cases E=mc2 is perfectly conserved. Thus when the LEP electrons and positrons smashed into each other it was pure E=mc2, and the signals indicating the bosuns that are involved in the electroweak interaction and the three quark jets that confirmed the gluon/ quark/anti-quark 'strong' interaction that mediates the strong nuclear force for instance, were clear and relatively unambiguous.
The LHC is colliding protons with protons, not even anti-protons. But even if they were using anti-protons the ambiguity in the interpretation of the results would still be more compared to those of the LEP because protons are not FUNDAMENTAL particles at all, they are composite particles. They consist of three valence quarks surrounded by an intense quantum maelstrom of virtual mesons composed of gluons and the 'sea' quarks. This we know from the LEP and earlier experiments.
So it's clear the use of proton proton collisions removes the clarity with which the results from the LEP experiment were blessed. In short the interpretation of these LHC collisions is so hazy that if we compare the LEP with astronomy, then the LHC results are astrology!
The physicists have already decided the next collider will have to go back to using electrons and positrons, almost as if they knew all along the LHC was a mistake!
The BBC has to start being more sceptical in it's science coverage. Right now they are letting the scientists off the hook, and even when they are so obviously taking the piss by using the term, 'the God particle' still the BBC just seems to suck it up and deliver it to us as serious science. Sad but true.
