Trash in the Attic: Viewers attack reality show 'ghetto' on daytime BBC which shows up to five hours of antique and auction programmes EVERY day
BBC daytime television is turning into a “ghetto” of antique and auction shows for as much as five hours a day, it was claimed yesterday.
Viewers are becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of variety on BBC1 and BBC2 with retired and shift workers claiming they are bombarded with “cheap” and “interminable” home and property shows.
Others have called on the BBC to put more of its vintage archive on during off peak hours instead of reality shows.
Writing to the BBC’s Points of View, one said: ‘I’m pretty much sick to absolute death of the amount of Antique/Auction shows on BBC1 and BBC2 every day.
‘I work in the evenings, so all I see all day on the BBC are constant shows like Homes Under The Hammer, Cash in the Attic [and] Bargain Hunt. I sit down to dinner and I see Flog It, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, Antiques Road Trip [and] Antiques Roadshow. Do you really need so many of these types of shows?’
Another said: ‘Being retired now, and because of the awful summer this year, I’ve spent more time at home than usual.
These cheap and nasty [home and auction] programmes definitely aren’t aimed at me, or if they are, they are way off target.
Day after day of the same pointless, boring, mind rotting junk is insulting to anyone’s intelligence.’

Between 10am and 1pm on BBC1 audiences are fed a daily diet of such programming with shows such as Bargain Hunt and Britain’s Empty Homes, while on BBC2 much of the afternoon features programmes including Restoration Roadshow and Flog It!
Many viewers have requested that instead the corporation access its archive and put on much-loved shows from the past.
It recently began broadcasting old episodes of Only Fools and Horses, with audiences claiming this is preferable to endless banal programmes on auctions and antiques, with some taking to social networks and the BBC’s online messageboards to make suggestions.
One fan said: ‘There’s no excuse for the poor daytime schedules. The BBC is sitting on decades of programming.’
Another said: ‘ The BBC must have one of the most impressive archives in existence.
Surely they could have a trawl through and find some programmes which would give respite from the interminable house purchase programmes or selling people’s possessions at auction, or experts selecting items at car boot sales for ‘contestants’ to sell at auction.
‘It really is time for a bit of variety. Now these tired old programmes are on at the weekend too. Does no-one in programming have any imagination?’
Rights issues will restrict the programmes the BBC can use from its archive and royalty payments could prove more expensive than creating “new” reality programming.
The BBC has openly admitted it is cutting back in daytime, and has already said it will axe some shows next year, including Cash in the Attic.
In April, the corporation’s daytime controller Liam Keelan pledged there will be no more than two programmes of any genre shown each day.
He said: ‘That means no more than two quizzes a day, or two consumer shows, antiques or collectables, and property.’
The changes have yet to filter through to screens but BBC insiders say audiences will see a difference next year.
But the network is cutting back as part of its Delivery Quality First initiative, which is focusing money on “flagship programming” on at peak times when more people are watching.
