Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was on this evening, and they had a celebrity edition of the programme. The first couple on was Jenny Bond and Michael Buerke. I knew she is or was the royal correspondant, and while he seemed mildly familiar I couldn't place him. The TV guide informed that they were both newsreaders.
They were asked a question for £32,000 and had 2 lifelines left, - Asking the Audience and 50-50.
The question was 'which one of the following literary figures married a particular woman, whose name I don't remember, but was distinctly foreign.
The possible answers were
Sherlock Holmes,
The Scarlet Pimpernel,
Cyrano de Bergerac
And one other I don't recall, but was an unlikely answer.
They weren't sure, though Buerke thought it might be Cyrano de Bergerac, since he also had a foreign name, so they decided to ask the audience. The audience gave them a 58% response that it was the Scarlet Pimpernel, the largest by far of any of the other possibilities. Still Buerke and Bond went for 50-50, whereby Cyrano was eliminated and they went with The Pimpernel.
Two thing struck me about this event.
The first that here were two supposedly intelligent and educated people that didn't seem to know the story of Cyrano, one of the most powerful and entertaining classics, whose role was acted superbly by Jose Ferrer. One of the few stories where the hero doesn't get the heroine, though loves her from afar.
The second was that they didn't trust the intelligence of the audience, and needed 50-50 for confirmation.
You may probably have guessed where this is going by now, but at this point it occured to me that they must have worked for the BBC. I did a google search and sure enough, they did.
Perfect!
