Few if any intelligent people could deny that Jerusalem is the most important city to the Jews. This is what Wikipedia has to say about it:
Precisely because Jerusalem is so important to the Jewish and Christian world, the Muslims, wanting to get a 'leg in', came up with the story that it is the place where Mohammed ascended to heaven. Normally this kind of tactic would be scorned, but since the Western world wants to appease Islam it swallows its urge to laugh and goes along with it.
When the UN mandate granted a partition plan for Israel and Palestine, unable to decide how to allocate Jerusalem, it elected for it to be a kind of international city run by the UN. But the Arabs took immediate control of it.
Today, the status of Jerusalem remains one of the core issues in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, West Jerusalem was among the areas captured and later annexed by Israel, while East Jerusalem, including the Old City, was captured by Jordan. Israel captured East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and subsequently annexed it. Currently, Israel's Basic Law refers to Jerusalem as the country's "undivided capital".
Not wanting to invoke the wrath of Muslims, few countries have ever located their embassies in Jerusalem, preferring the safer alternative of Tel-Aviv. The USA was supposed to have transferred its to Jerusalem, but Obama, unsurprisingly, has put it on hold for the time being.
However, the London Olympics committee has solved the whole complex issue. After launching its website over the weekend, on countries participating it had listed Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, despite there being no official country as such, and for Israel - no capital at all. It also has Israel in Europe, and Palestine in Asia.
Here's how they originally ran it
Following many complaints they initially changed the Israel page to appear this way but after consideration they decided to take capital cities out of all countries and finally end up with
They do still have Israel in Europe and Palestine in Asia though.
It's worth looking at the logo the London Olympic committee selected for themselves. Is it just me or does it look like there's a figure, the one with the Olympic rings on its head, giving a blow job to somebody.
Seems perfect - putting the 'limp' into Olympic, and you can see just how they will inspire a generation.
"The Jewish people are inextricably bound to the city of Jerusalem. No other city has played such a dominant role in the history, politics, culture, religion, national life and consciousness of a people as has Jerusalem in the life of Jewry and Judaism. Since King David established the city as the capital of the Jewish state circa 1000 BCE, it has served as the symbol and most profound expression of the Jewish people's identity as a nation." [1] Jerusalem has long been embedded into Jewish religious consciousness and Jews have always studied and personalized the struggle by King David to capture Jerusalem and his desire to build the Jewish temple there, as described in the Book of Samuel and the Book of Psalms. Many of King David's yearnings about Jerusalem have been adapted into popular prayers and songs. Jews believe that in the future Jerusalem will become the center of worship and instruction for all mankind and consequently become the spiritual capital of the world
Jerusalem appears in the Jewish Bible 669 times and Zion (which usually means Jerusalem, sometimes the Land of Israel) 154 times, or 823 times in all. The Christian Bible mentions Jerusalem 154 times and Zion 7 times. In contrast, the columnist Moshe Kohn notes, Jerusalem and Zion appear as frequently in the Qur'an "as they do in the Hindu Bhagavad-Gita, the Taoist Tao-Te Ching, the Buddhist Dhamapada and the Zoroastrian Zend Avesta"—which is to say, not once.
