Imagine I headlined an article I was writing like this:
It's gay men who contribute most to society
What is your reaction?
Would you feel stimulated enough to read more, or would you think 'what a crock' and cast it aside while your inwardly seething at what passes for intelligence in today's world. Feel free to let me know.
A few days ago. Matthew Parris wrote such an article in the Spectator with the headline as indicated.
Being of the latter reaction above, I also felt impelled to share my disgust at his ridiculous claim, just on the basis of the headline. It hardly inspired me to read more of this idiot. There were also plenty of others like myself who felt similarly, and within hours my comment had 27 likes, and also received comments from other readers - not necessarily pro.
I made it clear in my comments that I had not read the article, but that the headline was too ludicrous to want to proceed further, and that it had nothing to do with my own sexual preferences.
One reply I had was as follows: sarah_13 replied to you: You should read the article, Parris is an excellent writer.
To which I wrote: Sarah I usually enjoy and agree with your comments, but here I must disagree.
The headline itself rankles with me for two reason - MEN and GAY are stated as being best for society. It's just too ridiculous to contemplate, and if this guy had any intelligence he should have considered showing it.
As a woman, regardless of sexual orientation, I would have thought it might have bothered you too.
I was quite surprised and angry when at the end of yesterday evening, after posting quite a few replies to those who had commented on my posts, to find 2 of my original comments had been deleted. When what I see as straightforward common sense being expressed, with no reason for any moderator to be involved, yet still finds my thoughts threatening enough to their particular mindset so as to delete them from the record, it gives greater cause for concern. Elements of 'The Ministry of Thought' ala BBC immediately spring to mind.
Then this afternoon when I went to comment on the article about my posts being deleted I noticed something else - the headline had been stealth edited
It now read: Hedonistic? No, today's gay men are civic-minded - and conservative (you can still see from the link url however what the original headline is there)
I now made this comment:
2 of my comments remarking how stupid was the original headline for this article were deleted - without just cause. Then the author does a stealth edit of the headline, changing the whole context.
For the record the original headline was Matthew Parris: It's gay men who contribute most to society
Clearly Parris understood from the various comments posted by myself and others just how asinine it was, and subsequently changed it.
Whoever was responsible for the deletion of my comments, to civilised beings you have a lot to answer for. Shows the Spectator adopting the BBC tack as a Ministry of Thought.
As for Parris, it makes you insidious as well as rather ignorant.
This time I'll save the comment on my PC - just in case.
Perhaps it was Parris himself who deleted my posts, I wouldn't put it past him, and I doubt I'll ever know.
In doing a Google search on this article I did come across this little snippet. A website called 'Muck Rack', that is apparently for journalists, had reference to this article. Here's what they wrote:
Notice the glowing terms for this article, which still then had the original headline, like this one:
Beautiful column by Matthew Parris on gay kindness, rendered all the more noble alongside the bile of comments below
Noble indeed, so understandably they would see any of those who dissented from their view as bilious.
You will also see Emily Maitlis, the Newsnight presenter, also happy to add her assent. As I'd already commented to Sarah above, I would have thought a woman, even a BBC woman, to have felt at least somewhat slighted by the headline.
What it shows is just how our society is descending into madness, and those who are driving it there.
