In last night's Question Time debate, in response to a question about the increased sexualisation of young children, one panellist replies that the changed values of British society since the 60's, the increased media focus on sex, and even sex education classes themselves have led to the rise of promiscuity, teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, where sex is regarded like 'tennis' without it's former puritanical reverence.
Another panellist stated that children badgered their mothers for clothes which made them look older and for more Barbie dolls: 'There's always been this sinister culture that has gone along and it has always been sexual.
'The Barbie doll herself is a fetish, she's descended from a sex toy.
'Little girls learn to flirt with their fathers ... you know, "kiss daddy goodnight" and all this sort of business and you wonder whether what's happening in marketing is responsible or whether it is actually causing it.'
This same panellist also responded to the topic of Gaddafi urging his troops to rape rebel women as a weapon of war, by stating 'You don't have to have a government fiat [order] to do it.
'One of the interesting things you might ask about what happens if we send in ground troops: how will we be sure they don't do a bit of raping in their turn?'
Boos from the (as ever) largely left wing audience were present at the comments of the first panellist and a father got very angry at the comment of the second, and 38 people complained to the BBC about it, both for degrading family relationships and demeaning our military.
So which story do you think the BBC elected to highlight today?
If you said the first, then you can go to the head of the class. This related to Peter Hitchens of the Mail on Sunday, who made valid points that the left wing mindset chooses to dismiss.
Germaine Greer was the one who had complaints made about her comments but the BBC choose to ignore, preferring instead to focus on Hitchens. Dimbleby himself attacked Hitchens' remarks referring to the Daily Mail as a large source of sexualisation, although Hitchens is a columnist for the Mail on Sunday, and whose observations concerning the BBC we have often included on our site.
The Daily Mail ran the article on Greer and quoted the response from the BBC to the complaints received A BBC spokesman said they had received 38 complaints in the wake of the broadcast, adding: 'The nature of Question Time means a wide range of views will be aired.
'Germaine Greer's comments were in the context of robust discussions, the audience registered their thoughts on what she said and she was challenged both by members of the audience and the panel.'
The BBC clip related to Hitchens is here. You can see the treatment he got from Dimbleby and the audience as well on it. Decide yourself if he makes sense or not.
