The headline for one of the BBC's Mid-East stories today is this: Israeli-Arab couple charged with imprisoning daughterThe odd thing about the headline is that the couple are not from Israel, or even the area where Israel have any settlements, but from Qalqilya, firmly inside the Palestinian territory of the West Bank. The only connection to Israel is that the man was handed over to the Israelis for trial by the Palestinians who arrested him, and the woman was arrested in Israel. This still doesn't make them 'Israeli-Arabs'. On the plus side is that because the BBC have now put Israel into the heading they seem to be forthcoming about the negative deeds perpetrated by this couple against the man's daughter, which they are normally loathe to do. Take this extract for example - She said her father had threatened to rape her until she became pregnant if she tried to escape, and that he would then have used the pregnancy to accuse her of shaming the family and justify killing her.
He regularly beat her with electric cables and sticks, and poured cold water on her when she asked for her mother, she added. This is what the BBC usually allows to pass as 'honour killing' when forced to report it, although they are at pains mostly to avoid identifying the particular religion of the culprits involved. Here it shows the conscious use of it by this scum Palestinian as a threat to his daughter. Not often we get a real glimpse of life among the Arabs from the BBC. I did make a copy of the webpage just in case this particular piece gets edited out. (hat-tip - deegee)
