18 Doughty Street, the excellent new online media site is running a new campaign to produce an ad against funding of the BBC. Naturally this is a topic close to our hearts. I ask everyone to think of how to make this as effective as possible. I suggest that all of you with ideas post them directly on the site there, but it would be good for you to include them below here as well.
Here's my offering:
Here's my offering:
I believe the thread of this ad should be as follows:
Start with voice and BBC logo - "'BBC', is it the British Broadcasting Corporation, Blatantly Biased Corruption, or Big Brother Coverage?"
Scene1: A single mother being led into a cell after giving her child over to a relative to take care of - A 'Get one - Or Get Done' sticker is visible to show the 'protection racket' mentality of the BBC.
"If a citizen of a society has to pay under penalty of imprisonment for a service, then it should support that society. If it doesn't, then it is nothing more than an evil tax supporting corruption, forcing a citizen to undermine their own values."
"So how does the BBC see 'supporting' our society?"
2. Next scene of various rallys by extremist militant Muslims with signs such as we saw following the Danish cartoons. Another in China where police are laying in to peaceful demonstrators. Another of a woman being stoned.
"For the BBC to increase its world media status, it has to ingratiate itself to many corrupt regimes which oppose the values of our society. Which is why they are able to broadcast in countries like Iran and China. Do you see Sharia Law and those of our nation as compatible? Yet the BBC would have you believe that it is possible to integrate with those who wish harm to us under the banner of 'multiculturalism'. Live and Let Live is a good motto, but how do we 'live' with those who would kill or take away those rights that are the foundation of our society?"
3. Scene of Tessa Jowell, and the newspaper headlines of the scandal involving her and her husband, as well as pictures of the other personalities like Prescott, Blunkett, etc and corresponding newspaper headlines outlining their scandals. Return to picture of Jowell, this time shaking hands with a BBC boss, with headline expressing her optimism over renewing the license fee.
"How 'independant' can the BBC be if it needs the government of the day to continue to grant it's license fee - not only it's life blood at present, but that which gives it the cloak and status of being 'fair and balanced'?
Except where the government gets in the way of the BBC's global ambitions mentioned earlier, does the BBC really give us the low down on their 'achievements'?"
4. Scene of the various elements of our transport system at a halt following slight adverse weather conditions; Hosepipe bans around the country, headlines showing profits made by the water companies, and Ofwat's decision to do far less than even slap them on the wrist for not investing in repairing the leaks in the system. Headlines showing prisons full, rising crime, immigration errors. Then to scenes of the Katrina disaster and BBC headlines of the Bush administrations perceived failures to deal with it.
"The BBC went to great lengths to demonize the Bush administration for its perceived failures in dealing with one of the greatest disasters in its history, covering an area far in excess of our own nation, yet how well does it highlight the failures of our own government to make our country safe, reliable, secure, healthy, and prosperous? If not knowing too much about our own failures, while lambasting those of anothers makes you feel better, then the BBC is doing a good job there."
5. Scenes of Jerry Springer the Opera
"The BBC felt empowered to show something that was clearly offensive to Christians, the dominant religion of our country. Despite numerous complaints even before the programme was aired, they dismissed these and went ahead. Can you imagine, even in your wildest dreams, them doing something similar which denigrated Islam to a fraction of that done here? So much for balance."
6. Scene of headlines from various sources accusing BBC of bias, and Israel cutting ties with BBC over their middle East coverage.
"The BBC likes to project that it 'takes accusations of bias seriously, and goes to great lengths to be fair and impartial'. So how does it deal with the most blatant accusations of bias; it elects its own 'independant' BBC loving panel to judge it innocent of such charges. So much for bias.
7. Scenes of Eastenders, Coronation Street, and numerous other soaps; snooker, darts, makeover shows, moving or decorating house shows, moving country shows, antique shows, once popular comedy shows, but shown next to a rapidly turning calendar spindle showing the year it first aired to the present.
"And what of the quality? Do we get value for money in entertainment for our enforced support of this supposed symbol of democracy? Well viewing figures are continually dropping, and is it really any wonder?" Private companies have to work to succeed, but since the BBC gets its money regardless, it would appear its own internal corruption and contempt for its public has for the most part made it unable to find creativity in this sphere. We do however get continual assurances from them that this is not so. We're only the public and the ones who pay their salary - what do we know?
No wonder they have contempt for us -we support them.
BUT SHOULD WE?"
