Falkender wins £75,000 from BBC
The BBC is to pay £75,000 in libel damages to Lady Falkender over her portrayal in a drama-documentary about Harold Wilson's final administration. Lady Falkender, who, as Marcia Williams, was his personal and political secretary, will also receive legal costs over the broadcast last year of The Lavender List on BBC Four.
Lady Falkender said that the settlement should “nail the lie once and for all” about the 1976 honours list. The programme wrongly claimed that it was Lady Falkender, rather than Wilson, who compiled his prime ministerial resignation list. It suggested that she had included people who had assisted her or from whom she hoped to receive personal assistance. It also wrongly suggested that she had had a brief affair with Wilson and used this to blackmail him.
