This is a long established world-renowned competition which was started in 1983 and the rules were clear and firm. Each country can enter one singer. Now the BBC has three singers from the USA this year. Why change a brilliant formula?
And why dumb down the title of the accompanying Lieder Prize to Song Prize?
And why introduce an Audience Prize? The best singer is chosen by a jury of experts, why should the self-selected audience second guess these experts?
What next? Will there be phone-in voting (BGT style) so that all those prepared to pay premium rates can vote?

What next? Will there be phone-in voting (BGT style) so that all those prepared to pay premium rates can vote? I wrote this too soon. The nexxt session, that evening, they invited phone votes from anyone for the Audience Prize. If they do away with the main prize then they will finally have succeeded in wrecking the most important serious-music vocal prize in the world.
