There are a number of politicians who are putting themselves forward under dubious names, at least to those of us who are old enough to remember that when Miss Jones married Mr. Smith she became Mrs. Smith virtually automatically.
I do understand that a subject of HMQ can call him, or herself anything they wish, as long as it is not done to defraud anyone, or to avoid liability for a criminal offence. I call myself "Charmbrights" on here for reasons I cannot clearly explain.
Now it appears many politicians can call themselves anything they wish in order to "persuade" people to vote for them, and this is not regarded as fraud.
The trend started, in the modern era, when Viscount Stansgate insisted on being called Anthony Wedgwood Benn. Viscount Stansgate, of Stansgate in the County of Essex, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1942 for the Labour politician and former Secretary of State for India and Secretary of State for Air, William Wedgwood Benn. He was the second son of Sir John Benn, 1st Baronet, of The Old Knoll. Lord Stansgate's eldest son and heir apparent, the Hon. Michael Benn, had been killed in the Second World War, and he was consequently succeeded by his younger son, the second Viscount, better known as the Labour politician Tony Benn, who disclaimed the peerage on 31 July 1963, the day the Peerage Act 1963 passed into law and made it possible for him to do so, but he did not repudiate it for his heirs. Since 14 March 2014 the title has been held by the latter's son, the third Viscount. As a descendant of the first Benn Baronet of The Old Knoll he is also in remainder to this title.
Modern instances of demanding the use of misleading names includes:
Mrs Ed Miliband - who campaigns as Justine Thornton, former child actress and now a British barrister, eschewing all connection with Ed..
Mrs Ed Balls - who demands to be known as Yvette Cooper, currently the Shadow Home Secretary, who is, perhaps, more famous than her husband.
Mrs Jack Dromey - who also demands to be known as Harriet Harman, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party since 2007, and is also currently Shadow Deputy Prime Minister and Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, though some of her exact titles are somewhat unofficial.
Mr. Harriet Harman is know by the name Jack Dromey. He is MP for Birmingham Erdington, and was previously the Deputy General Secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union and Treasurer of the Labour Party. It is under that name that he was associated wit some scandals about money for favours under Anthony Charles Lynton Blair, who apparently also disliked his given Christian names.
Why are these people referred to by the BBC, and even allowed to ask for our votes, under names which they should, by all convention, have relinquished some time ago?
