We often see that figures quoted by BBC commentators are "from a poll by YouGov" and the implication is that this is a properly designed sample of the population (probably a stratified random sample). Go to yougov.co.uk/account/register/ and you will see that the panel YouGov use is self selected and internet-active only, and therefore biased towards politically active and younger members of the population. Furthermore, if you can be bothered to do so, having multiple email addresses allows you to register multiple times. Now I have four email addresses, one for work, one for family, one for social life, and one for shopping; does this mean that my opinion is (potentially) four times as important as my seven year old great-grandson's (who has only one email address) or infinitely more important than my wife's (who does not have an email address)?
